Ellen, Jonathan and Emily Mather
In November we were told the devasting news that our beautiful 6 year old daughter Emily had relapsed and had cancer for the second time. We were told she needed surgery and then informed she needed 6 weeks of brain and spinal radiotherapy and that the chances of a cure were now less than 30 percent.
Emily's radiation treatment was needed 5 days a week but there was no accommodation available during treatment because she was not an inpatient.
We live a good distance from the hospital and would be traveling around 5 hours a day with a sick child that was starved for anaesthetic each day. We were looking at staying in a hotel or looking at short term lease rental. We didn't have much time to find somewhere as Emily's treatment started on the 20th December. I mentioned to a friend about looking for accommodation within a few hours I recieved a call from Tony and debbie offering to help and provide us with luxury barge for the duration of Emily's treatment at no cost. We were so grateful and surprised that strangers would do this for us. We met Tony at the beginning of December when he arranged for us to stay at the hotel when Emily had surgery to have her hicman line inserted we were overwhelmed by his and Debbies kindness and generosity . Tony showed us the barge it was amazing luxuary, spacious and everything we could possibly need.
The first day we arrived to stay on the boat Debbie and Tony were there to meet us and showed us around the boat. The boat gave us the time together we needed as a family without the need to worry about Emily catching infections. Our girls saw this an exciting adventure. Debbie and Tony made us feel so welcome and comfortable doing everything they could for us including our laundry. They offered us to eat at the hotel insisting we didn't pay. They did everything they could to try to take any stress that could be avoided. Tony and Debbie have kept in touch and have continued to allow us to use the boat for overnight stays for Emily's appointments. We will forever be thankful for what they have done for us during a very stressful time.
